Landscape on draught
Used beer mats

This piece is a mosaic recreation of Ferdinand Hodler’s 1902 painting of the Kien Valley. I first saw the original at the National Gallery and was completely mesmerised by it. To create my interpretation of it, I cut up beer mats and arranged the pieces like tiles, turning a throwaway object into something more lasting. I liked the idea of using an everyday material to interpret a painting that felt so monumental.
Breaking the mats down and rebuilding them into a new image reflects the way we remember and reimagine artworks over time. It’s both a personal response to Hodler’s landscape and an experiment in how familiar objects can be reshaped into something unexpected.
