For years I have been interested in what I call ‘dead umbrellas’ and I’ve been photographing them since 2014. The trusty umbrella can be instantly rendered redundant, and in total frustration, the umbrella gets dumped and left for dead. This artwork is a collection of some of my best pictures from the last eight years. I have teamed these with bold graphic interpretations of the umbrella fabric. Crushed, abandoned, crumpled like roadkill, sometimes left flapping in the wind as if clinging onto life. Kitsch, colourful, bold, brash, branded, I’ve seen it all. Some go in the bin. Most don’t make it that far, but all become rubbish.
