As an 8-year-old boy, I joined my local Cub Scout pack in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. I was new to the area and it was a way to meet friends, learn new skills and grow in confidence. It taught me valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, camaraderie and lesser-used skills such as pancake flipping and knot-tying. The uniform was a big part of my sense of belonging. Competing for badges and gaining status through acquired rank were all part of the experience.
I wore my jumper and all its patches with pride. It’s the single most memorable piece of clothing from my childhood. Recreated here from photographs taken in 1983, on the march, carrying the flag for my ‘pack’, 1st Thorley (St. James) Scout Group.
