‘Refuse to skip’ depicts Soft Cell’s Tainted Love on a galvanised bin lid. Not only did this track hit the charts at number 1 in 1981, but it kick­started a lifelong love affair with all things music, being the first song I ever listened to as a child (big thank you to Frank and Sandra Wilson). The original version of this song, by Gloria Jones, was also one of the first songs my parents ever danced to on their numerous Northern Soul All Nighters up and down the North West. ‘Refuse to skip’ celebrates the power of music to shape ones identity and transform everyday experiences into lasting obsessions. Though the love in the song might be tainted, my love of music is far from that.
